SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: STAR TREK ENTERPRISE
Alright, so there were a lot of people telling me that I could skip Star Trek Enterprise. It seems there’s a lot of mixed reviews out there. Some people love it, some people hate it. A lot of trekkies I talk to say it really doesn’t have anything to do with the Star Trek lore, that it doesn’t really add to it, and I wouldn’t miss anything if I skipped it.
I can’t do that. I started watching Star Trek at Voyager. When I realized that I had started at the end, I decided once I was done with Voyager, I would start right from the beginning with the prequel: Enterprise. I actually really liked it. There were some things I didn’t care for, but overall, I thought it was a really great show. I normally don’t read a lot of science fiction. I don’t have anything against science fiction books, I just don’t normally read them. I enjoy watching Science Fiction shows, so Star Trek was a great choice. But there were some issues I had with Enterprise.
Star Trek Enterprise: the good
There were a lot of things I enjoyed about the show. I thought season three was amazing. I loved Doctor Phlox, he really added to the show and I really wished they’d put him into it a lot more like they did the EMH in Voyager.
Another good point was T’Pol. I really didn’t like her at first, but her character arc was amazing. Honestly, I think one of the reasons I enjoyed the show so much was seeing how her character grew, and some of the issues that she got into. I also liked the story between her and Commander Tucker.
There was a lot of other good points in the show, but for the sake of keeping it brief, I will leave it with my two favorites above.
Star Trek Enterprise: the bad
Unfortunately, there was a lot of bad points as well. Hoshi Sato for one. I just couldn’t get a feel for her character. I didn’t hate her, but I didn’t like her either. I think it’s because when the show started off she seemed very whiny and kind of clingy. They weren’t very good qualities in a character. Thankfully she wasn’t the lead female or I might not have made it through the show (I love strong female leads).
In a Mirror, Darkly: how is this one of the top rated episodes of the show? It’s beyond me. I seriously almost skipped it. I’m used to watching alternate reality/timelines from Voyager, but normally they have some kind of tie in with the story at large. This one didn’t. We got to see everyone acting extremely evil and having lots of sex. It did absolutely nothing for me.
Star Trek Enterprise: the very horribly bad
Alright, we can’t talk really bad parts of Star Trek Enterprise without touching on the gem of all horrible aspects: Anthony Montgomery‘s portrayal of Ensign Travis Mayweather. Just . . . WHY? It was . . . unfortunate.
Alright, that about sums up my review of Star Trek Enterprise. Despite seeming like I had more complaints with the series than I had good things to say, I really did enjoy it and recommend it. However, if you hate it, don’t blame me.
