I can’t begin to tell you how many people have said “did you watch Divergent?” “Have you read Divergent?” “Divergent is so good, you have to read it!” But I was reluctant. Even my cousin told me I should read the book, and I still was just like “meh.” Why didn’t I want to read this great new young adult novel? Because I was afraid that it wouldn’t do anything for me. I thought it was going to be a bland plot with pathetic characters and I would hate it. Worse, I thought it would have a transparent female character who was a badass just for the sake of being a badass.
I was wrong.
I worried that the love story would be horrible and that the entire story would be a romance wearing the mantle of dystopia. Again, I was wrong.
Divergent really surprised me. I haven’t read the book yet, but I did just watch the movie and I have to tell you that now I want to read the books. It wasn’t amazing, but it was a thousand times better than I had anticipated. Partner that with a hot love interest, a respectable female lead, and some snarky comedy and I was in heaven!
I will certainly be adding Divergent to my reading list, but I have so many books I want to read now, there’s no telling if I will ever get to them :-/
